Who are we?

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is a designated body in terms of a Zimbabwean Act of Parliament. It is wholly owned by the Government of Zimbabwe  and operates in accordance with the public sector rules and regulations. The NRZ mandate is to operate an competitive bulk rail transportation service for bulk goods(freight) and passengers. It was established in 1897 and operates a system that is 2 760 route kilometers of 1 067mm gauge track. It is geographical positioned as the hub and gateway to the region of Southern Africa Development Community (SADC). National Railways of Zimbabwe and Mozambique are linked through Mutare/Machipanda border posts to Beira as well as Sango/Chicualacuala that goes to Maputo. South Africa is linked through Beitbridge, Botswana is connected via Plumtree and Victoria Falls to Zambia.

The National Railways of Zimbabwe promotes the transformation of the economy and the lives of the people of Zimbabwe through an innovative provision of seamless, efficient, reliable, cost-effective and safe transportation service of goods and passengers in the country.

Corporate Governance

In line with good public sector corporate governance the organisation has an Internal Audit Branch that is headed by the Chief Internal Auditor under the direction of the Chairperson, Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee of the NRZ Board which approves the Audit Charter, the Risk Based work plan and the scope of work to be performed.

The Internal Audit Branch’s role is to appraise governance, risk management, and control systems and provides recommendations and actions required to regulate unacceptable risk exposure in alignment to the organisation’s risk appetite. Internal Audit also proffer appropriate recommendations aimed at improving performance and adherence to controls to manage expenditure in order to preserve and protect the interests of organisation.

The assurance and consulting activities are done in terms of the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing Framework (IPPF) as provided for by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) (Global) of which the Internal Audit Staff are members of IIA (Zim).

Internal Audit Whistle Blowing

In order to inculcate a culture of honesty and integrity, a monetary reward is paid to a whistle blower who provides information leading to recovery of stolen property or that results in aversion of loss of assets.
